Tougher Than Arizona Immigration Bill Introduced in Utah

Utah State Representative Stephen Sandstrom has introduced an immigration bill which in some ways may be tougher than Arizona’s embroiled S.B. 1070, yet omits the “onerous” and “punitive” aspects of the bill.

Rep. Sandstrom said he might be willing to bend on some minor points of the bill to improve its chance of passage, but will not compromise on allowing police to question individuals on their immigration status, as this is the “key to the bill.”

Rep. Sandstrom is expecting opposition, but says there are “dozens upon dozens” of legislators who will support the bill, and he believes it will ultimately pass.

Scientists confirm pyramids in Bosnia are oldest known pyramids in the world

Bosnian pyramids have been finally confirmed. Pyramid experts from all over the world have confirmed the existence of the Bosnian pyramids. In addition, 90% of all these experts said that the the Bosnian pyramids are by far the world’s largest and oldest pyramids. There are five (5) pyramids in Bosnia and it is said that they are 12000-26000 years old. In 2010 UNESCO added the Bosnian pyramids into their World Heritage sites. UNESCO and the CIA are planning to make the Bosnian Pyramid Valley the world’s largest and most valuable historical monuments by 2012.

ABC 7: America’s Education System is Failing African American Boys

Young black males around the country are graduating at much slower rates than their white counterparts, according to a national educational study released Tuesday.

The graduation rates for black males in Oakland mirrors the national numbers in this report. But this is a problem Oakland educators are working diligently to solve.

There is a crisis in Oakland schools. The graduation rate for black students is just shy of 50 percent and for other races it is 70 percent.

Why black students in this largely African-American city aren’t graduating at the same pace is one of the problems principals are trying in vain to find solutions to during summer meetings held even before students head back to school.

They now have a goal.

“We are saying in the next four years, we have to double the graduation rate of African-American males,” Superintendent of Schools Tony Smith said.

A new study by the Massachusetts-based Schott Foundation found that Oakland is hardly alone. The report concluded that schools around the country are “systemically failing black males.”

Nationally, the graduation rate for black male high school students is just 47 percent. In California, the numbers are only slightly better — a 54 percent graduation rate for African-American males — 78 percent for whites.

Black males in New York City and Philadelphia school districts fared among the worst, with a 28 percent graduation rate. They did the best in New Jersey.

Experts say money and a historic lack of it in urban districts is to blame.

“Most import is the overarching inequality of distribution of educational resources in this country,” UC Berkeley African American Studies professor Na’ilah Nasir, Ph.D. said.

The report also says black males are punished more and given less opportunities in class than their white peers.

Oakland educators say it is possible to make a lasting change. Principal Brandi Patterson, whose own mother had a fifth grade education, says she’s living proof that teachers can and do make a difference.

“You have such a great opportunity to impact the students in ways that you will never see, and it lasts a lifetime,” she said.

Some educators and the expert ABC7 spoke to also blame what they view as failed educational programs at the federal level, including the No Child Left Behind Act. The emphasis on test scores, they say, has set many African-American boys up for failure.

9/11 Witnesses Murdered

Emergency coordinator for the New York Housing Authority, and key 9/11 eyewitness, Barry Jennings has passed away with controversy about WTC7 still hot as the BBC hit piece and NIST report have been released to counter Jennings exclusive testimony of explosions inside Building 7. Jennings passed away at age 53 from circumstances not yet disclosed.

A spokesperson for the Housing Authority has now confirmed his death, after weeks of rumors circulating online, but refused to give any further details. Several other individuals at the Housing Authority also confirmed that they knew Barry Jennings, and that indeed he had passed away about a month ago. No other details were available.

No one has yet been able to contact anyone in the Jennings family and the official cause of death is not yet known, but online comments have reported the date of death as August 19, 2008.

It is very unusual that a prominent — and controversial 9/11 witness would die only days before the release of NIST’s report on WTC7 and shortly after a firestorm erupted over his testimony that he heard explosions inside the building prior to collapse of either tower and that there were dead bodies in the buildings blown-out lobby.

The BBC aired The Third Tower in July in attempt to debunk Barry Jennings’ account, which is both contradictory and damaging to the official 9/11 story by making issue over whether or not he said he saw dead bodies in the lobby.

Yet Jennings’ own statement in an exclusive interview with Dylan Avery and Jason Bermas, which has not been denied was: “The fire fighter who took us down kept saying, Don’t look down. And I said, Why?.. And we were stepping over people, you know, you can feel when you’re stepping over people.”

Now the release of Jason Bermas Fabled Enemies is giving further exposure to Jennings’ controversial account. The film features a full interview with Barry Jennings, as well as the statements he and Michael Hess, who was also trapped with him inside WTC7, made to news media on the day of the attacks.

Barry Jennings reiterated in the exclusive interview his confusion over the explanation for WTC7s collapse given that he clearly heard explosions inside the building.

That interview was not released until June 2008 at the request of Mr. Jennings, who had received numerous threats to his job and asked that it be left out of Loose Change: Final Cut because of those threats.

Jennings statements have lit fire to questions about what really caused the sudden collapse of WTC7 just as NIST had hoped the release of their report would quash widespread beliefs that the building was brought down by controlled demolition.

News of Jennings’ death comes on the heels of losing another 9/11 hero and eyewitness Kenny Johannemann, who reportedly committed suicide 12 days before the seventh anniversary of 9/11. Johannemann is credited with saving at least one mans life on 9/11 and was also a witness to explosions in the towers.

NIST’s report, as well as that of the 9/11 Commission (which did not even mention WTC7), completely ignored statements from the building leaseholder Larry Silverstein as well as numerous police, fire fighters and other eyewitnesses who have testified that they were warned about the buildings collapse and told to get back. One rescue worker even heard a countdown for the buildings implosion.

The truth about WTC7 will come out, and Barry Jennings’ testimony will not be in vain.

Obama gets blasted as ‘worst President’ ever

Well, we wondered who would be the first public figure to call Barack Obama “the worst president in history” — an appellation applied to most White House occupants at one time or another.

We just didn’t think it would be Dan Quayle’s son.

Ben Quayle, 33, who is seeking the Republican nomination for a U.S. House seat in Arizona, has cut a commercial denouncing Obama, as well as “drug cartels in Mexico” and “tax cartels in D.C.”

For good measure, the former vice president’s son ends his stark ad by proclaiming: “I love Arizona. I was raised right. Somebody has to go to Washington and knock the hell out of the place.”

Note that Quayle, a lawyer and managing director of a Scottsdale, Ariz., investment firm, has also been criticized for alleged links to a racy website, claims his campaign has denounced as a smear.

Barack and Michelle Obama are entitled to vacations, but they are not King, Queen or royalty such as the King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain. The Obamas should remember that US families are suffering from the horrible economy.

The last time I checked, the United States of America was a constitutional republic with three co-equal branches of government. Obviously, the President and his wife missed civics class and believe we are living in a monarchy. What else can explain their outrageous behavior? They think they are the King and Queen of America, to hell with the U.S. Constitution.

During his tenure as President, the First Couple has enjoyed lavish parties, state dinners, multiple vacations, concerts, golfing trips and expensive Broadway dates. It has been one non-stop party at our expense. Over the last 19 months, the First Couple has been living as monarchs instead of public servants. This opulent lifestyle has not been earned, but is being financed by suffering American taxpayers.

The latest outrage occurred last week in Spain, where Michelle Obama vacationed with her daughter and forty of her closest friends. As this country deals with the long term ramifications of Obama’s policies, Mrs. Obama was dining with the King of Spain, Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia. On the resort island of Mallorca, the First Lady munched on gazpacho, turbot, veal escalopes, rice, a vegetable ratatouille and fruit with ice cream. How nice to dine with royalty as millions of average Americans are looking for a job and trying to provide food for their families.

This five day jaunt cost taxpayers close to one million dollars. What an outrage, just the latest example of a tone deaf administration. In good economic times, this type of outlandish travel is inappropriate, but especially in this horrible economy, it sends the wrong message.

If Mrs. Herbert Hoover took a trip on the Queen Elizabeth with dozens of her friends and charged the taxpayers of this country, the media of the early 1930’s would have vigorously complained. Today, the only criticism comes from the dreaded world of the Internet and talk radio. The lap dog lame stream media thinks it is just great for the First Couple to act like royalty.

Average Americans think much differently from the lame stream media. Among the media elite, Barack and Michelle Obama are still very popular; however, in real America, the popularity of Obama style politics is plummeting. While the media constantly bombards us with stories of his accomplishments or her great fashion, the American public is not listening. In fact, as the media reports the President playing basketball with NBA stars or Mrs. Obama lunching with monarchs, the American people are becoming angrier.

Ironically, the media is making it worse for their heroes. The only thing that will help Obama reverse his poor standing is a turnaround in the economy and his policies are preventing a true recovery from ever starting.

In the meantime, there is an ongoing political disconnect with the American people. The Obamas continue playing the role of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” while Americans live paycheck to paycheck, if they can even find a job. Americans know that the bad economy has been made worse by the President’s policies.

If the First Couple were truly concerned about the plight of their constituents, they would be more mindful of their actions. In contrast, the Obamas don’t consider the American public their bosses, but really their subjects.

They rule over us with their feel good liberalism, espousing unworkable high minded policies for a variety of problems. Unfortunately, none of the Obama agenda is working. For example, the stimulus package was a dismal failure and the healthcare bill is incredibly unpopular in this country.

It seems the administration is purposely pursuing an agenda that is at odds with the wishes of the American public. While media cheerleaders show the President playing basketball or his wife jet setting across the globe, the popularity of the Obama administration only declines more.

The American people have had enough of this presidential partying. The Obamas should understand what they are creating, a climate for the type of political revolution that has not been seen in this country for many years. Of course a revolution is the last thing any real or phony monarch wants to see from his loyal subjects. Does anyone remember King George III?

Scientists say there could be 100 million alien Earths in our galaxy

Alan Boyle writes: A leader of the Kepler planet-hunting team has created a slow-moving scientific stir by telling an audience at a high-tech conference that our galaxy could harbor 100 million Earths, based on the space mission’s raw data. The resulting buzz focuses not only on the findings, but also on the means by which they came to light.

The conclusions drawn by Harvard astronomer Dimitar Sasselov totally make sense, based on the composition of our own solar system. If we look at the eight dominant planets, four of them are Earth-scale, two are Neptune-scale, and the other two are big gas giants. (And then there are hundreds or thousands of smaller worlds like Pluto.)

During his July 16 talk at the TEDGlobal conference at Oxford, Sasselov observed that the preliminary results from Kepler were following that pattern. So far, planetary candidates “like Earth” – those that are no more than twice as wide as our own planet – make up the largest category in Kepler’s database, according to a chart Sasselov used to illustrate his talk. The proportion is significantly more than that for Neptune-sized, Saturn-sized or Jupiter-sized candidates. (These observations came just after the eight-minute mark in the video embedded above.)

“The statistical result is that planets like our own Earth are out there,” Sasselov, a co-investigator for the $600 million Kepler mission, observed. “Our Milky Way galaxy is rich in this kind of planet.”

If you extrapolate that kind of distribution to the entire Milky Way galaxy, there might be 100 million alien Earths out there, Sasselov said.

“That’s great news,” he told the TEDGlobal audience. “Why? Because with our own little telescope, just in the next two years, we’ll be able to identify at least 60 of them.”

Once those candidates are confirmed, follow-up observations would be conducted to study the planets’ atmospheres and determine whether they could sustain life. The search for alien Earths, as opposed to alien Jupiters, naturally leads to the search for alien life, Sasselov explained. “Life as a chemical system really needs a smaller planet with water and with rocks and a lot of complex chemistry to originate, to emerge and survive,” he said.

So when we’re talking about millions of alien Earths, we’re talking about one of the biggest stories in astrobiology.

The last word? Hardly
Sasselov emphasized that he was sharing preliminary findings, based merely on the candidates Kepler has turned up so far. The little Kepler telescope is built to gaze fixedly at a patch of sky for months, looking for the faint dips in the intensity of starlight that occur regularly when a planet crosses over the star’s disk. Astronomers on the Kepler team say those detections have to be confirmed by other means. Why? It’s because they want to rule out any possibility that the dips are being caused by some other mechanism, such as the mutual eclipses of binary stars.

The Kepler team has been holding onto much of its preliminary data for that purpose, with the big reveal scheduled in February. The fact that a lot of the Kepler data is still being held back has rubbed some scientists the wrong way – and the fact that Sasselov discussed an aspect of the findings that apparently had not yet been made public added to the controversy.

Once Sasselov’s comments started making their way across the interwebs, NASA began facing questions over whether significant findings had slipped out of the Kepler team’s net.

Some news outlets, such as the Daily Mail, fixed upon the suggestion in Sasselov’s chart that 140 Earthlike candidates had been found, as well as his comment that Earthlike planets “with water and with rocks” were of particular interest. The buzz over Sasselov’s remarks picked up last week when the TED website posted a video of his presentation.

New news, or new spin?
Responding to the buzz, NASA stressed that the Kepler team has confirmed detection of only five planets, not the 140 mentioned in the news reports. Sasselov, meanwhile, told Space.com that he was “simply repeating what was already announced” last month by the full science team.

“So no new news here – but more to come later in the year!” he told Space.com.

It’s true that one of the research papers put out by the team goes into the size distribution question, but that paper goes only so far as to note that most of the candidates appear to be Neptune-sized or smaller. In fact, the earlier charts suggested that alien Neptunes are more numerous than alien Earths. So at the least, Sasselov’s comments put a new, Earth-centric spin on the previously announced results.

ScienceInsider’s Richard Kerr said Sasselov’s presentation “was especially striking because it was largely based on Kepler data that team members had been allowed to keep to themselves for further analysis until next February. So, traditionally, such data would be released formally with all involved scientists onboard.”

NASA Watch’s Keith Cowing said he was confused by Sasselov’s seemingly significant non-news: “The Kepler folks seem to want to have things both ways,” he wrote. “On one hand they want to tantalize us (and select audiences) with what they have found but yet at the same time they do not want to put their reputations on the line when people start taking their comments as fact. This project clearly needs to put some PR strategy in place.”

My efforts to get comments from Sasselov or other members of the Kepler team today were unsuccessful, but NASA spokesman Michael Mewhinney did tell me that the scientists are preparing a fresh response and would provide further clarification on Tuesday. So check back here for updates as they become available.

Update for 8:55 p.m. ET July 27: Sasselov tries to dispel the “confusion” over Earth-sized planetary candidates in a posting to NASA’s Kepler mission blog. During his 18-minute TEDGlobal talk, “the expected number of planets, size and Earth-like chemistry got confused, and created a misunderstanding,” he said.

In the blog posting, he emphasizes that the Kepler telescope can measure the size of objects as they pass over a star’s disk, but can’t say much about their climate or chemistry – let alone whether they have water or rocks. In fact, he notes that the Earth-scale planets detected by Kepler so far couldn’t be Earthlike in the water-and-trees sense because they circle their parent stars in such hellishly close orbits. They’re nowhere near the “habitable zone” within which life as we know it can exist.

“The first data release is an encouraging first step along the road to Kepler’s ultimate goals, specifically, to determine the frequency of Earth-size planets in and near the habitable zone,” Sasselov writes. “However, these are candidates, not systems that have been verified sufficiently to be considered as planets. The distribution of planet sizes may also change. It will take more years of hard work to get to our goal, but we can do it.”

Sasselov is looking forward to reaching those ultimate goals because of another role he plays – as leader of Harvard’s Origins of Life Initiative, which tries to make connections between planetary science and biology. In his TEDGlobal talk, he sought to emphasize that “progress in synthetic biology may be accelerated by input from planetary science.” That’s why he made the connection between Kepler and the search for life.

Another co-investigator for the Kepler mission, William Borucki of NASA’s Ames Research Center, provided yet another follow-up in a telephone interview after Sasselov’s blog posting was published. He said Sasselov’s TEDGlobal lecture “was a little bit disturbing” because the discussion focused on “Earthlike” planets rather than “Earth-size” planets. “Earthlike is not Earth-size,” Borucki said, for the reasons we’ve already mentioned.

Borucki also said the now-famous graph that Sasselov used was not quite correct, because the leftmost category actually takes in everything less than two and a half times as wide as Earth, not just twice as wide. The fraction couldn’t fit on the original slide, but the graph would be corrected to bring it into sync with Figure 2 on page 7 of the scientific paper released by the Kepler team last month, Borucki said.

That figure shows that “super-Earths,” between two and three times as wide as our own planet, make up the peak category for Kepler’s candidates so far. Neptune-scale candidates (three to four times as big as Earth) make up the second-biggest category, and not-so-super-Earths (less than two times as wide as Earth) add up to the third-biggest category. There’s a quick fall-off, however, when you’re looking for things less than twice as wide as Earth. “By the time you hit one and a half [times as big as Earth], you’ve got nothing,” Borucki said.

Borucki suspects that the fall-off is merely due to the fact that “we have not yet been able to bring these small transits out of the noise,” and that Kepler will eventually find plenty of candidates trending down toward true Earth size.

So if you’re looking for Earth’s exact twin in the current crop of Kepler data, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re looking for life, you needn’t limit yourself to Earth size or smaller. In fact, Sasselov is among those who argue that super-Earths are superior for fostering life. And the Kepler database suggests that astrobiologists will eventually have a juicy selection of super-Earths to choose from.
