Wikileaks unveiled their largest vault of confidential CIA documents which they dubbed ‘Vault 7’. One of the documents revealed a bombshell – the U.S. government is secretly paying to keep U.S. software such as iOS and Android unsafe.
The U.S. government is paying to keep U.S. software unsafe. They are intentionally developing vulnerabilities instead of securing systems. This is criminal and reckless. This means iOS and Android can be hacked, spied on and/or infected with malware. Because of the software vulnerabilities, various messaging apps with encryption can also be accessed.
CIA Turned Samsung Smart TVs into Listening Devices, WikiLeaks Dump Reveals
Hackers within the Central Intelligence Agency have developed malware which can turn Samsung Smart TVs into listening devices, leaked documents published by WikiLeaks Tuesday reveal.
The malware, coined “Weeping Angel” – released as part of WikiLeaks’ “Vault 7” data dump – appears to have been created during a 2014 joint workshop with Britain’s equivalent spy agency MI5.
The attack, which seems to require physical access to the TV and an infected USB drive, enables a “Fake-Off mode” that allows the microphone to be accessed remotely even after the TV has been seemingly turned off. The malware also suppresses the TV’s LED lights, removing any suspicion that the device is still active.
Weeping Angel can also reportedly extract usernames, passwords and Wi-Fi keys – allowing the target’s network and other connected devices to be compromised.
“The tool appears to be under active development,” security researcher Matthew Hickey told Forbes. “The capabilities it boasts cannot currently capture video, according to the leaked docs.”
“But that is a goal of the project. It can record audio but it does not stream it in real-time to the CIA. Instead it copies it off the TV as files.”
Vault 7: CIA Bypasses Encryption Apps Used by Whistleblowers, Press
The CIA can effectively bypass the encryption used in secure texting apps popular with whistleblowers and journalists.
By collecting audio and text messages on a targeted phone before they’re encrypted for another party, the CIA can effectively suck up the private data sent on Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp and other secure apps, according to the Vault 7 document dump by Wikileaks.
It’s a confirmation of a long-standing assumption that intelligence agencies intercepted data after it was transcribed on a keyboard but before it could be encrypted by software.
“The CIA’s Mobile Devices Branch (MDB) developed numerous attacks to remotely hack and control popular smart phones. Infected phones can be instructed to send the CIA the user’s geolocation, audio and text communications as well as covertly activate the phone’s camera and microphone,” Wikileaks reported. “…These techniques permit the CIA to bypass the encryption of WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Wiebo, Confide and Cloackman by hacking the ‘smart’ phones that they run on and collecting audio and message traffic before encryption is applied.”
This is akin to having a burglar already inside your house who steals your valuables before you can lock them in a safe.
To sum it up, the effectiveness of these secure apps is undermined by the CIA-created vulnerabilities on affected phones.
These vulnerabilities include “zero day” exploits, which are named for the fact that the security holes are exploited before the community is aware of them on “day zero.”
“Zero day” vulnerabilities can exist naturally in buggy software; typically they can exist anywhere from three months to nearly three years before being recognized as a security threat.
Facebook has announced it will ban any Vault 7 posts and or discussions while CNN is pretending they haven’t hard about Vault 7, no news about it, no reports, nothing. Zero! Do these imbeciles really believe they still have any power? So funny…
