An attempt by MSNBC to portray Donald Trump as a racist hilariously backfired after the network cut to video footage of a black voter endorsing the Republican front runner.
Host Tamron Hall set up the segment by asking Mother Jones bureau chief David Corn about former KKK member David Duke’s endorsement of Trump.
Corn recycles talking points about Trump being a racist by association before Hall introduces a clip of “the new people” Donald Trump is “bringing into the fold”.
Obviously expecting the video to feature a racist Trump supporter, the feed instead cuts to a clip of a black voter named Frank Vick who endorses Trump and decries media race bating.
“David Duke and people like that they come out from under the rocks this time this year,” says Vick. “It got nothing to do with Donald Trump. We’re all Americans. We need to stop with all this racist stuff. Like me and my friend right here (points to white guy). We just met today and we gotta stop with the racist stuff.”
After the feed returns to the studio, Hall looks completely flustered and doesn’t know what to say.
“Um, clearly, let me just be clear here,” she stammers.
“Obviously, the majority of Donald Trump supporters are not African-American, I don’t know how many African-Americans were in that building, but that is one person, that uh, we have chosen to cut that sound from….Uh, David?”
Corn then simply ignores the hilarious gaffe that has just occurred before accusing Trump of “riling up all sorts of bigotry and hatred.”
“Rather than cut to some racist KKK supporter, the control room cut to a clip featuring a black Trump supporter named Frank Vick who praised Trump and attacked the media for trying to divide Americans based on race, describing exactly what Hall and her guest Corn were just doing,” points out Chris Menahan.
“They were totally caught with egg on their face as they weren’t expecting a black man to downplay the whole BS issue on David Duke and the KKK,” adds Jim Hoft.
