New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition of over 800 pro-gun control US mayors, has launched a USD 12-million television advertisement campaign aimed at pushing US Senators to put their weight behind gun control efforts.

“These ads bring the voices of Americans – who overwhelmingly support comprehensive and enforceable background checks – into the discussion to move Senators to immediately take action to prevent gun violence,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg – who co-founded the group in 2006 – said in a Saturday statement.

The new ads will be broadcast in 13 states, namely Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The announcement by the group comes as the Senate is set to discuss federal gun control legislation next month.

A few days ago, Democratic Senators voiced support for stronger background checks on arms sales.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns plans to hold more than 100 events nationwide on March 28 in support of the gun control legislation.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the National Rifle Association (NRA) Andrew Arulanandam lashed out at Bloomberg for the ads campaign and pledged that the NRA will contact Senators and urge them to vote against the proposed gun control legislation.

“What Michael Bloomberg is trying to do is … intimidate Senators into not listening to constituents and instead pledge their allegiance to him and his money,” Arulanandam said.

The year 2012 was a record-setting year for gun sales in the US.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of two to three billion dollars.

On December 14, 2012, twenty children and six adult victims were fatally shot by a gunman — who later killed himself — at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in the US state of Connecticut. Earlier in the day, the assailant had killed his mother in another location.
