Italian citizens are planning to file a collective lawsuit against former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, holding him accountable for the mismanagement of public money, Press TV reports.
Thousands of Italians have already signed the petition collected by a class action committee in Milan and more signatures will be collected in other cities in the coming days, Press TV correspondent reported on Wednesday.
Independent radio station, Radio Popolare, and the magazine on ethical and alternative finance, Valori, will then file the lawsuit against Berlusconi in the Court of Auditors on behalf of Italian citizens.
“We have been told that it is time to make new sacrifices because the Italian debt has risen to unprecedented levels. We believe that the debt was mainly caused by former Italian President Berlusconi and we want to collectively sue him for his irresponsible conduct,” Maria Bonafoni of Popolare radio station said.
According to those who intend to file the lawsuit, Berlusconi had deliberately implemented wrong measures to win the consensus of the electorate or favor people or companies close to his interests.
In 2008, the media tycoon and former prime minister abolished a property tax that has cost Italy more than 3 billion euros.
Again in 2008, Berlusconi vetoed an Air France-KLM’s deal to buy wretched Italian flag-carrier Alitalia which cost Italy another 3 billion euros.
In 2009, Berlusconi’s blockage of the construction of the bridge over the Strait of Messina cost the country a 450 million euro penalty imposed by the EU.
Berlusconi, 75, dominated the Italian politics for 17 years until he announced his resignation on November 8, after coming under immense pressure to step down over a series of scandals and for mishandling the country’s economy.
