Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has identified ‘the exposition of US dishonesty’ as one of the ‘key achievements’ of the revolutions around the region.
Larijani reiterated that ‘movements’ in the Arab world have once again unmasked the US and noted, “[US President Barack] Obama is no different than [former President Georg W.] Bush and all such differences between slogans and practice are repulsive for a country like America and people will never forget these treacheries,” Majlis news agency (ICANA) reported on Thursday.
The Iranian Majlis speaker described the revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East as initiatives for freedom and efforts to unshackle people from the chains of authoritarianism and dependence on foreign powers.
He said that the US has been unsuccessful to undermine any of such moves despite its mobilized efforts to reach its objectives.
Larijani criticized the US for sidestepping Bahrainis’ plight for constitutional reforms in the face of a brutal suppression in the Persian Gulf island kingdom and said, “…They opt for all-out military attacks against Libya’s government in support of the Libyan people but do the opposite in Bahrain and order the armies in some Arab countries to launch military incursions in that country and crack down on people that are calling for their demands peacefully.”
He said that the Islamic Republic throws its weight behind the oppressed Muslims in Bahrain and around the region irrespective of their Shia or Sunni faith.
The top Iranian legislator cautioned Bahrain not to pursue US policies in the region and urged Saudi Arabia to respect the rights of Bahrainis and refrain from meddling in the tiny island nation’s affairs.
Larijani also reiterated that the West has long sought to dominate the region in efforts to take advantage of its natural riches and to control its people.
Meanwhile, Bahraini protesters continue to demand the ouster of the 200-year-old-plus monarchy as well as constitutional reforms.
At least 25 people have been killed and about 1,000 others injured during the government-sanctioned crackdowns on peaceful demonstrators.
Joined recently by police units and troops from Saudi and the United Arab Emirates, the Bahraini government forces have launched a deadly crackdown on the popular revolution that began to sweep the Persian Gulf island on February 14.
The Saudi-backed forces of Bahrain have recently been sighted while destroying religious and historical monuments in the Muslim country.
On Wednesday, the Human Rights Watch accused Bahraini forces of using violence against people that had already received injuries during earlier attacks.
