Israeli discovery: first humans came out of Middle East and not Africa

Professor Avi Gopher, a researcher from Tel Aviv University's Institute of Archaeology, holds a pre-historic tooth at Qesem cave, an excavation site near the town of Rosh Ha'ayin

Scientists could be forced to re-write the history of the evolution of modern man after the discovery of 400,000-year-old human remains.

Until now, researchers believed that homo sapiens, the direct descendants of modern man, evolved in Africa about 200,000 years ago and gradually migrated north, through the Middle East, to Europe and Asia.

Recently, discoveries of early human remains in China and Spain have cast doubt on the ‘Out of Africa’ theory, but no-one was certain.

The new discovery of pre-historic human remains by Israeli university explorers in a cave near Ben-Gurion airport could force scientists to re-think earlier theories.

Early humans: Middle Awash Aramis, Ethiopia, where the first 'modern' human beings were thought to have been discovered

Archeologists from Tel Aviv University say eight human-like teeth found in the Qesem cave near Rosh Ha’Ayin – 10 miles from Israel’s international airport – are 400,000 years old, from the Middle Pleistocene Age, making them the earliest remains of homo sapiens yet discovered anywhere in the world.

The size and shape of the teeth are very similar to those of modern man. Until now, the earliest examples found were in Africa, dating back only 200,000 years.

Other scientists have argued that human beings originated in Africa before moving to other regions 150,000 to 200,000 years ago.

Homo sapiens discovered in Middle Awash, Ethiopia, from 160,000 years ago were believed to be the oldest ‘modern’ human beings.

Other remains previously found in Israeli caves are thought to have been more recent and 80,000 to 100,000 years old.

A group of international and Israeli researchers have discovered pre-historic artefacts and human remains at the site that may prove the earliest existence of modern man was about 400,000 years ago.

The findings of Professor Avi Gopher and Dr Ran Barkai of the Institute of Archeology at Tel Aviv University, published last week in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, suggest that modern man did not originate in Africa as previously believed, but in the Middle East.

The Qesem cave was discovered in 2000 and has been the focus of intense study ever since.

Along with the teeth – the parts of the human skeleton that survive the longest – the researchers found evidence of a sophisticated early human society that used sharpened flakes of stone to cut meat and other impressive prehistoric tools.

The Israeli scientists said the remains found in the cave suggested the systematic production of flint blades, the habitual use of fire, evidence of hunting, cutting and sharing of animal meat, and mining raw materials to produce flint tools from rocks below ground.

‘A diversified assemblage of flint blades was manufactured and used,’ the Tel Aviv scientists wrote, describing the tools they found in the cave.

‘Thick-edged blades, shaped through retouch, were used for scraping semi-hard materials such as wood or hide, whereas blades with straight, sharp working edges were used to cut soft tissues.’

The explorers said they were continuing to investigate the cave and its contents, expecting to make more discoveries that would shed further light on human evolution in prehistoric times.

  this is not suprising, that the tip of the iceberg, the greatest fine will be to find out that white folks were on the planet first and that Black people came from white people.

@R.C. Beckom: Sadly, we could be headed in that direction……and what’s ironic, is that most of the same people who actually believe what you just talked about hate the Jews, too.

I.T.S. I heard you loud and clear, that hate you speak is just another form of controling others. If you love me, you might do what I say, but, if you fear me you “will” do what I say. also believe what I tell you to believe also. here’s a brain teaser for you: “I began to wonder, what is that I understand about what it is that I think I understand according to someone who understand what they think they understood according to their understanding of what it is that is label being a fact according to their understanding of being understood. all I really saying is there is truth, and there is what’s true.

It’s amazing how many times “scientist” have had to rewrite history. Maybe everyone should stop listening to what these so called “experts” have to tell us. We need to think for ourselves . They are constantly telling us who we are and where we came from, and yet they keep going back and saying”oops, we have to rewrite history yet again”. Maybe it’s because they also don’t have a clue. We just listen and accept everything they say. In the end no one knows anything.Think for yourselves, research yourself. You’ll find the truth

      It’s not the scientists’ fault.
It’s society. We won’t listen to anything unless the scientist is saying “This is the truth!”
Most who pursue science would be happy to say, “This is the truth as best as we can see given our current set of data.” Science would love to remain objective, but that doesn’t get your discovery reported on television or in papers/magazines, and sadly there isn’t a lot of money out there for research or the sciences as a whole, so people need to expose their ideas to the layman. But no media wants to present the story that says “we believe, given current observations, that butter may have a significantly smaller impact on overall health when consumed in smaller portions and/or less often.”
No, they’d rather run with “BUTTER WILL KILL YOU!”

So then, when a study finds that small amounts of butter can actually help certain people, given certain circumstances, then the story comes out saying “Turns out butter won’t kill you.”
This gives the impression of uncertainty and that the first story was a lie, when in actuality science isn’t simple and you can’t make blanket statements.

Useful timing since Israel aren’t allowing Ethiopian Jews into their Country any longer and now there’s seemingly a rationale for that. Is the finding supported by other scientific communities?

  9. what does it prove? says:

All it means is that the person who was around those 400,000 yrs ago …just lost his teeth in that area. If want to prove anything just keep looking in the cellular level and at DNA structuring, and at ancient fossils and artifacts. But who really cares what the first human was. Its the importance of your contribution here on this planet that really counts. Now, lets look at that. Who and What are YOUR people known for? Who did they step over, steal ond kill to get what they have now. Its the name of the game, its the human way, I dont think so. Its just a argument the guilty party comes up with to justify thier position. It is ALL about to change really soon.

Are you people really that ignorant to world history?
The term “Middle East” is a recent political term used first in the early 1900-1950’s. Its correctly “North Eastern Africa”. The land was originally inhabited by Africans and current genetics shows that Caucasians genes can only go back to some 6,000 – 8,000 years ago (google it for the academic study).

Any “race” other than African was relatively recent between 6-10k years ago.

Well, one of the big clues is just what you’ve read in the posted article. Science is a self-correcting process. No need to turn to philosophy or spirituality in a quest for truth.

    ==============================

That’s typical whole-lot of Afro-Centrism and Afro-narcissism. A modern human presence in Europe has been well documented since 45,000 years ago. The Aurignacian tool culture associated with the modern humans which first evolved in the Near East, subsequently appeared in south-eastern Europe 40,000 to 45,000 years ago displacing the earlier Mousterian culture there associated with Neanderthals. Sure there were many academics in the U.S. and elsewhere in the recent years who postulated that moderns first migrated to Europe only 12,000 or 15,000 years ago, that such migration constituted only 8 individuals, and that all native Europeans are descended from the group of such 8 individuals. Well, the more radical you sound, the more books you sell. And of course, unless overwhelmingly disproved with direct physical evidence, such views over time become mainstream. For instance, until about five years ago, the mainstream view in most scientific journals was that there is no way that modern humans have first evolved earlier than 40,000 to 50,000 years ago. Then some skeletons were found which dated to about 180,000 years ago. The notion was also that moderns never left Africa until about 40,000-50,000 years ago. But there was a skeleton of a modern teenage boy found in Israel some 20 years ago that was dated to 90,000 years ago. So the modern human populations have been around for quite a while, and they have settled into different parts of the world for quite a while. Now come up with something else.

Yeah, and there was some offshore oil discovered in Belize 1 or 2 years ago. The money from the sale of contracts to oil companies to drill this oil by the Belizian gov’t was all pocketed by the Belizian gov’t officials. Population en large saw little of it. Blacks stealing from blacks. You want to change our planet and contribute to humanity, then get proactive with that. That’s injustice on a vast scale occurring in the modern day, right now.

ok,now that all has been said, I would just like to throw out there in the universe the fact that Satan who is female has been working her deceptions by deceiving her believers(true believers know better) into thinking that “she” is a “he” and that they (her believers) are all going to heaven when she get back there. when she is the one who got kicked out, & even had the power to create just like the Father until he took them away from her. But here it seems as if we have some folks here who are trying they best to prove that they have come from an area that seems to only show signs of a culture existing there that they know is not their culture. well, I’ve said enuff. can this conversation be put in its right propective so that we all can gain from it? cmon yall, let’s put some real truth on the table for once, time is getting short for us all so what are we waiting for? tell the truth so that we all will understand it. we all know so much until we know nothing,

On the question of what or who to believe when religion or more keenly the literal interpretation of the scriptures clashes with the scientific approach, there is a good series of documentaries called the “Foundational Falsehood of Creationism” which do a good job resolving some of these dilemmas and uncertainties. Moreover, on the question of who took away what from whom, and how deeply were the lines drawn between the oppressors and victims throughout the colonial era, this may be difficult to reconcile as there are many views and takes on this subject ranging from “Guns, Germs and Steel” to “Africa Addio”, which leaves a lot of gray area.

People will learn one day that we have traveled the globe countless times over and the “origin of man” will be set in thousands of different places dating back to millions of years. It all boils down to nothing. We arose from the dust and will return there once again, repeating a cycle that has gone on more times than anyone can count. Until we stop and speak, nothing changes.
